What is this "ugh" about?

The A99 is 24MP, if you use a crop lens on it then not all the pixels on the sensor are receiving light, and thus you are using less of the sensor. Around 10.3MP is to be expected when using a crop lens. The 36MP D800 in crop mode is 15.5MP when using a crop lens.

Either way that is still plenty of MP for a decent sized print. At 360dpi, it is about a 10.9" x 7.3". At 180dpi, it is about 21.8" x 14.6".

You'll still get the low light, low noise levels that a full frame sensor gives you over a crop sensor.
